This pandemic is impacting everyone, however I am very interested in how it is affecting the work of Child Life Specialists. How have they been able to adapt? What are they doing differently? I have interviewed multiple child life specialists in the hope of answering the following questions...
Pre-Interview Questions:
- Full name.
- What is your job title?
- What is your educational background - what degrees do you hold and from where?
- Where do you currently work?
- How long have you been working with children and families?
- How long have you been working in your current position?
- What population(s) are you working with?
- Do you agree to participate in this study?
- Do you agree to being video taped and audio tape for this study? (I will be the only person to view these files. I will erase all video and audio taped interviews once I complete this project. I’m anticipating graduating in December 2020).
RIC Interview Questions:
- In your own words can you describe to me what a Child Life Specialist is and what they do?
- What first interested you in becoming a Child Life Specialist?
- What was the process that you took, both educationally and professionally, to get to where you are?
- What would you say your strengths as a Child Life Specialist are?
- Can you tell me about a time when you felt really successful during an interaction either with a child or their family? (Noelle is listening for: Was there a specific technique(s))
- If they don’t give specific techniques, then you say: Can you walk me through what the interaction looked like?
- Can you tell me about a time when you had difficulties working with a child or family?
- Can you walk me through what happened?
- How have things changed for you in your work with children and families during the COVID pandemic of 2020?
- Research shows that for a variety of reasons, Covid 19 adversely impacts low income minorities more so than other populations. Can you talk about how you have seen this statistic unfolding in the places where you work?
- How has your identity influenced your work with minoritized children and families?
- If you were going to give any advice to a brand new Child Life Specialist intern, working with children and families during COVID-19, what would it be?
- Is there something in the field of Child Life Specialists that you would like to learn more about or get better at?
- Is there anything that you wish to share with me about the field that I have not asked?
- Could you refer me to any child life colleagues who might be willing to talk with me?
